For a California corporation or LLC buying registered agent services, compare a provider’s California receiving office, legal-document alerts and continuity terms. Northwest Registered Agent and Harbor Compliance publish California-specific services; neither service page establishes the full terms of your particular contract. (Northwest Registered Agent, California service page; checked 12 October 2026).[2]

Confirm the California role first
The California Secretary of State says corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships and LLPs must designate an agent for service of process. The agent is a recipient for legal documents; it is not the process server hired to deliver documents to someone else. The Secretary of State also explains that the designated agent is not the only legally permitted service route.[1]
Do not buy a national package merely because it lists many states. Ask for the exact California agent name and address to put on the entity’s filing, the entity types accepted and the date service begins. California Business Search excludes LLPs and certain other entity types; use the appropriate records route if an online search does not cover your business.[1]
Compare two California-specific offers
- Northwest Registered Agent — Published service: California agent service, a California address, document scanning and online account access. (Northwest Registered Agent, California service page; checked 12 October 2026).; What the buyer should verify: The exact agent-service offer, first-year and renewal charges, notification recipients and treatment of ordinary business mail. Separate any formation promotion from agent-service renewal.
- Harbor Compliance — Published service: A California receiving office, same-day electronic document delivery and portal support. Its California page lists a new-customer first-year price of USD 99 per state and an annual renewal price of USD 159; prepaid multi-year offers have separate conditions.[2]; What the buyer should verify: Whether the quoted entity qualifies for the initial offer, the renewal date and amount, filing assistance, escalation contacts and cancellation notice.
Harbor’s prices are provider-advertised amounts checked on 12 October 2026, before any separately charged filing or other service. Obtain a dated quote. No equivalent contract-level comparison of renewal, refund or exit terms is established here.[2]
Test the legal-document alert workflow
Send both providers the same operational questions: who scans the document, how soon the scan becomes available, which people receive alerts and what happens if nobody opens an alert. Ask for a demonstration using a sample document without real client information. Confirm whether the original paper is retained, forwarded or made available for collection, and whether that attracts another charge.
Identify a primary recipient and a backup inside your business. Require a way to update them when staff leave. A dashboard notification is useful only if the responsible person actually sees it; agree the escalation path for an unread urgent notice rather than treating an advertised scan speed as a promise about your response.
Compare the full annual commitment
- Separate agent service from formation, compliance filing, virtual-office and mail-forwarding products.
- Request the first-year total, renewal total, taxes, per-entity or per-state charges and any document or forwarding charges.
- Ask whether renewal is automatic, when the payment method is charged and how price changes are notified.
- Get the minimum term, cancellation deadline, refund policy and access period after cancellation in writing.
- Confirm who prepares and submits the state change-of-agent filing, who pays its fee and how acceptance is recorded.
For an illustrative comparison, a low first-year price may be less useful than a higher-priced offer that includes the specific handover work you need. Build your comparison from the quoted services and renewal cost, not from a formation advertisement or an assumed government fee.
Plan a controlled change of agent
Before ending the old service, verify the replacement’s start date and the applicable California filing procedure for your entity. Record who submits the change, who checks acceptance and who monitors incoming documents during the overlap. Ask the old provider how it handles papers received near the cancellation date and how you export historical scans.
Do not import resignation-notice rules from another state into the California agreement. Ask for the provider’s California resignation procedure, notice recipients and continuity arrangements, and have counsel resolve any legal uncertainty about the entity’s obligations.
Make the selection on a written scope
Choose the provider that confirms the required California service, a workable alert chain and the complete renewal and exit terms. Keep the dated quote, appointment information, accepted state filing and internal notification contacts together. A registered agent receives and routes documents; responsibility for assessing them and responding belongs with the business and its advisers.
