Novated Lease Comparison: Check the Quote, Residual and Job-Change Terms

Compare Australian novated-lease quotes only after matching the vehicle, term, kilometres, salary, running-cost budget, deductions, fees, GST treatment and residual.[3][4] Then check what the contracts require if payroll deductions stop.

Put every quote on identical assumptions

Salary packaging is an employee–employer arrangement that must be set up before salary is earned, and employees can package only benefits their employer offers.[1]

Give every provider the same inputs:

  • Vehicle: exact model and specification, drive-away price, new or used condition, and registration state or territory.
  • Employment and use: salary, annual kilometres and pay frequency.
  • Lease: term, amount financed and lease-end residual.
  • Running costs: identical categories and allowances.
  • Deductions and charges: pre-tax deduction, after-tax contribution, administration fee, establishment fee and GST treatment.

These fields reflect inputs and outputs disclosed across the Novated Lease Guide and Oly calculators.[3][4] If a provider changes the vehicle price, kilometres, term or included costs, ask for a revised quote rather than comparing different scenarios.

Convert each quote to an annual total as well as recording its pay-cycle deduction. Oly displays weekly, fortnightly and monthly figures.[4]

Separate payroll estimates from complete tax outcomes

Match taxable salary, pre-tax deductions, after-tax contributions, income tax and Medicare assumptions line by line. Oly displays these components but excludes HECS/HELP repayments and tax surcharges. It also warns that reportable EV benefits may affect personal circumstances and government payments.[4]

Novated Lease Guide’s advanced mode estimates some effects of reportable fringe benefits on adjusted taxable income, including possible HELP, childcare-subsidy and Division 293 effects.[3] Its output is therefore not directly equivalent to Oly’s on those items.[3][4] Where the treatment cannot be aligned, record the difference as unresolved rather than as a saving.

Moneysmart says eligible electric cars and associated expenses may qualify for an FBT exemption subject to conditions.[1] Confirm the vehicle, employer arrangement, relevant dates and applicable rules. Treat calculator assumptions about proposed future changes as a separate scenario until their legal status and commencement are verified; do not price a binding lease on an assumed future concession.

Stress-test the running-cost budget

Oly’s calculator includes estimated fuel or electricity, maintenance, tyres, registration, insurance and a vehicle-management fee.[4] Replace defaults with the actual employer-approved quote and document every allowance and fee. Confirm GST, frequency, indexation, exclusions and whether an optional product has been included.

  • Fuel or electricity: use expected kilometres and likely vehicle consumption.
  • Maintenance: base the allowance on the vehicle and expected usage.
  • Tyres: check whether the replacement allowance is realistic.
  • Registration: use the applicable state or territory cost.
  • Comprehensive insurance: obtain a quote based on the intended drivers and vehicle.
  • Vehicle management: identify the included service and separate fee.

Ask whether the budget includes optional products, whether the employee may choose an insurer, and whether external insurance or reimbursement attracts an administration fee.[6]

Smartgroup provides an arrangement-specific example of shortfall risk: its quoted FBT and employee contributions are estimates, and employees must fund certain shortfalls where actual kilometres differ or deductions are insufficient.[2] Do not assume another provider uses the same process.

Match the residual to the lease term

Record these fields for each quote:

  • the residual percentage and dollar amount;
  • the exact lease duration;
  • the vehicle value used as the calculation base; and
  • whether the residual includes GST.

Compare residual percentages only when the exact lease duration, value base and GST treatment match. Obtain the residual percentage and dollar amount from the finance schedule; an isolated calculator percentage without its term is not a reliable comparison.[3][4]

Novated Lease Guide models the residual as a lease-end payment.[3] Confirm the amount, calculation basis, GST treatment and lease-end options in the customer-specific finance schedule or contract. If the calculator figure cannot be tied to those documents, mark its methodology as unknown.

Compare Novated Lease Guide and Oly

Use these calculators to test assumptions and tax scope, not to establish contractual obligations. Customer-specific cancellation formulas, exit fees and employer-transfer procedures are unknown from both cited calculator pages.

Novated Lease Guide

  • Input control: Simple mode supplies assumptions, while advanced mode accepts quoted vehicle, finance, running-cost and financial inputs. Outputs include take-home-pay impact, effective interest rate and worst-case scenarios.[3]
  • Tax scope: The tool estimates some reportable-fringe-benefit effects on adjusted taxable income, including possible HELP, childcare-subsidy and Division 293 effects.[3] Check the settings and model date; an estimated personal tax effect or future-policy scenario is not confirmation of the applicable law.
  • Contract certainty: The tool describes itself as independent and unaffiliated with financiers or lease providers, so its calculations do not establish obligations under a provider agreement.[3]

Oly

  • Input control: Oly displays weekly, fortnightly and monthly costs, pre- and after-tax contributions, fees, taxable salary, tax and Medicare. Results are illustrative and subject to employer approval and possible credit assessment.[4]
  • Tax scope: It excludes HECS/HELP repayments and tax surcharges while warning that reportable EV benefits may affect personal circumstances and government payments.[4]
  • Contract certainty: Oly states that its result is neither an offer nor an accurate personal quote.[4]

Choose the tool with the required modelling scope, then reconcile its output to the formal quote, finance schedule and agreements. CR 2024/59 concerns the specified Smartgroup arrangement and people within its stated scope; it is not a universal ruling for all providers or every novated lease.[2] Check whether the actual arrangement falls within that scope before relying on its treatment.

Model resignation, job loss and unpaid leave

A change or loss of employment, or a move to an employer that does not offer novated leasing, may end salary packaging or leave the employee personally responsible for repayments.[5]

  • Resignation: model direct payments beginning after the final pay.
  • Redundancy or job loss: test whether repayments remain affordable without salary.
  • Non-participating employer: do not assume payroll packaging will continue.
  • Participating employer: ask whether the novation can transfer, which parties must approve it and what deadline applies.
  • Unpaid or maternity leave: model direct lease payments throughout the salary pause. Money.com.au warns that temporary salary cessation may require the employee to cover payments.[5]

Money.com.au describes potential residual and break-fee exposure on early payout.[5] Obtain the financier’s actual payout formula and a worked example for an agreed job-change date, identifying outstanding finance, residual, adjustments and fees without counting an amount twice. Confirm who invoices the employee after payroll stops, when direct payment begins and whether transfer or sale requires consent.

Under Smartgroup’s specific arrangement, unpaid leave around FBT year-end can leave insufficient funds for an after-tax adjustment. Employees agree to fund the shortfall through later deductions.[2] This process should not be assumed to apply to other providers.

What to confirm with each provider

Request the documents that define the employee’s obligations:

Advertisement
  • the itemised vehicle order and formal lease quote;
  • the finance schedule, novation agreement and salary-packaging agreement;
  • the running-cost budget and complete fee schedule; and
  • the early-termination and payout terms, including a worked payout example.

The cited pages do not state all customer-specific terms. Confirm in writing:

  • Finance: finance rate, any supplied comparison rate, total interest, brokerage, setup and exit fees, and quote-validity period.
  • Residual: calculation base, applicable term, GST treatment and lease-end payment.
  • Running costs: reconciliation frequency, treatment of surpluses and deficits, lease-end treatment, insurer choice and external-insurance fees.
  • Employment changes: procedures, deadlines, direct-payment arrangements and fees for resignation, redundancy, dismissal, unpaid leave, death or transfer to another employer.
  • Cancellation: the formula, fees and a worked early-termination payout.

Under Smartgroup’s arrangement, employees receive a Salary Package Confirmation Report showing proposed deductions.[2] Compare that report with the quote and agreements. Record anything the documents do not resolve as unknown, not zero.

Make the final comparison

  1. Normalised total cost: compare identical vehicle, term, kilometres, salary, contribution, fee and GST assumptions.[3][4]
  2. Running-cost budget: test expected usage, optional extras, insurer choice and responsibility for shortfalls.[2][4][6]
  3. Tax-model scope: identify which personal tax and reportable-benefit effects are included or excluded.[3][4]
  4. Residual and exit exposure: verify the residual calculation and what becomes payable after unpaid leave, job loss or an employer change.[3][4][5]

Treat the take-home-pay estimate as provisional while any major fee, residual basis, shortfall rule or early-termination formula remains unknown. Prefer the quote whose obligations are documented and affordable under both normal employment and a plausible interruption to payroll packaging.
